Health & Food Safety

Because of the way it is raised, Kona Kampachi® is one of the healthiest, safest and most wholesome fish on the market today.

As the public's interest in the nutritional value of healthy fish is increasing, the ocean's fisheries are suffering from overexploitation, and concerns are being raised about environmental pollutants in both farmed and wild fish. Recent independent laboratory analyses have revealed an ideal answer to this dilemma: Kona Kampachi®, a sustainably raised fish, has no detectable mercury. In addition, no growth hormones, prophylactic antibiotics or genetic engineering are used in raising this fish.

Sidestepping the Mercury Dilemma

Many varieties of fish and shellfish are known to be naturally high in heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, leading the American Heart Association and others to recommend that seafood be consumed at least twice a week.

Unfortunately, some of the best wild seafood sources of Omega-3's, including swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and golden snapper, can also have high levels of mercury in their biomass. The FDA recommends children and pregnant women limit their consumption of these fish.

In independent tests, Kona Kampachi® yields no mercury at a sensitivity level of .02 parts per million. (The FDA's allowable limit of mercury is 1 part per million.) With no detectable mercury, Kona Kampachi® is a great healthy fish choice that's safe for unlimited consumption, even by pregnant women and children of all ages.

Sustainable Also Means Healthy

Kona Kampachi®'s sustainable aquaculture methods are all based on natural marine processes:

  • Eggs are harvested from broodstock in our land-based hatchery, meaning Kona Blue can raise Kona Kampachi® without depleting wild fish stocks.
  • Brisk, open ocean currents circulating freely through the offshore pens create a naturally high exchange rate, ensuring pristine water quality inside and outside the cages.

And because Kona Kampachi® are fed a controlled diet throughout the life cycle, from live zooplankton for newly-hatched fish to sustainable feed for adult fish comprising approximately 25% fish meal and fish oil and 75% sustainable agricultural proteins and oils.

Kona Kampachi®'s integrated marine hatchery and offshore aquaculture technology includes an ironclad commitment to both sustainable and natural fish farming: These methods use no prophylactic antibiotics, no growth hormones, no genetic engineering and no artificial colorants.

That makes Kona Kampachi® one of the healthiest fish around.

The Ultimate in Quality . . . and Food Safety

At Kona Blue, we routinely test for contaminants, inlcuding PCBs, mercury, and melamine. We also continually monitor the Omega-3 levels as well as the nutritional profile of our fish.

Kona Kampachi® are generally harvested only when they are ordered, and are usually delivered to the end-user within 48 hours of harvest. The chilling process begins on our harvest boat as soon as the fish are taken out of the water. The fish are maintained at an optimal temperature during their quick trip from dockside to packing plant to airport and on to our customers—seafood distributors, restaurants and retailers, as well as individual customers who order our fish online.
